"Growing up Again"
author: Jason Wilson
I remember Growing up Again
"Back in the Day"
The title you’ve given those faded years
When you were a sympathetic character
And I, Being a naive youth
Was envious
Wanting to be a sympathetic character too
Mistaking of pain for depth
In the way youth and naiveté tricks us all
Mistaking lust for love
Love for lust
And all at once I was still more baffled by the unbridled
Kinmanship I felt for you

Down and through a twisted tangled path of High School romances
Rose thorns
Harsh and tender words
You have somehow ordained by fire
The title of sister

In these years we’ve gained
though still younger than we’d like to think
You tell me with joy and fear and a touch of sadness too
About the new life you’ve acquired
and how it’s growing now
Inside your womb

The thought of you being responsible for the first half of someone
Else’s growing up strikes in me a cord of sweet irony
While secretly
I blame you for the better part of my own growing up
I tell you in a tone of friendship too aged for sugar coating
That if you’re half as good with the first part of growing up as you
Are with the later ones
It’ll be one hell of a kid.
